LAND STRUGGLES: CAG Report Provides Hard Evidence Why the Land Acquisition Law Should Not Be Diluted

For the first time, a comprehensive audit of land acquisition for industrial projects is available. Though it studies only Orissa, it holds vital lessons for the nation. IT took India upwards of a century to pass a new land acquisition law. But it might take the country less than a year to dilute it. Within weeks of coming to power, the National Democratic Alliance government has proposed 19 amendments to the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act 2013.

The Week in Parliament

DURING the second week of Budget Session both the houses witnessed disruptions over the issue of Indian journalist meeting the terror mastermind Hafiz-Saeed. On this, the external affairs minister made a statement condemning the meeting and said the government had sought a report on the engagements of the journalist in Pakistan during his three week stay there.

Protests in West Bengal over Israeli Aggression in Gaza

THOUSANDS of protestors marched through Kolkata on July 17, condemning Israel’s aggression on Gaza. At the call of the Left Front, people assembled in Moulali in central Kolkata and marched to Park Circus Maidan. Biman Basu and other leaders of the Left Front led the rally. People from all walks of life, including workers, students, and intellectuals joined the rally. Fiery slogans were raised against Israel and US imperialism.

Left Front Sweeps the Panchayat Polls in Tripura

Change of Design needed to Ensure Minimum Submersion & Maximum Benefits

THE process of bifurcation of the state of Andhra Pradesh has turned the Polavaram issue into a more complicated one. The former UPA-2 government in its hurry to push the bifurcation bill had wanted to satisfy its own party leaders in Andhra area and therefore gave the national project status to Polavaram project. In 2009 itself, the then union government promised 10 district Telangana state including villages which would get submerged due to the project. The bill categorically stated that the submersion villages should be shifted to the residuary Andhra Pradesh.
