MAHARASHTRA: AIKS Mobilises 50,000 Peasants on Burning Issues

IN the second week of December 2015, over 50,000 peasants under the banner of the Maharashtra Rajya Kisan Sabha (AIKS) came onto the streets in 29 tehsil centres of 15 districts in all the five regions of the state on the four burning issues of land rights, loan waiver, remunerative prices and drought relief.The districts in which these actions took place were Yavatmal, Amravati and Buldana in the Vidarbha region; Parbhani, Nanded, Hingoli, Beed and Jalna in the Marathwada region; Nashik and Nandurbar in the Northern Maharashtra region; Ahmednagar, Satara and Solapur in the Western Maharash

The resolution on Tripura was moved by Brinda Karat, Polit Bureau member and seconded by G Ramakrishnan, Polit Bureau member. The following is the text of the resolution.

TRIPURA, a small state in north-east, has evolved into an exemplary dynamic developing state under the Left Front government. With its pro-people policies, Left Front government has not only developed the quality of life of the people of the state, but also showed how alternative policies can be pursued even with limited resources.

Barbaric Attack on SFI Leader by RSS-ABVP Goons

THE central executive committee of the Students’ Federation of India, in a statement issued on December 21, has strongly condemned the cold-blooded attack on Subhash Jakhar, SFI Sikar district secretary by the RSS-ABVP criminals. He is admitted to SK Hospital in a critical condition with 25 stitches on his head.  SFI has also condemned in strongest possible words the police attack on the protest demanding immediate arrest of the culprits behind the heinous crime. Hundreds of SFI activists were arrested by the police in Sikar. Many were manhandled and picked up even from the office of SFI.

AP: Police Brutality on Anganwadi Workers Seeking Wage Hike

THOUSANDS of anganwadi workers, under the banners of CITU and AITUC, took out a massive rally from Tumallapalli Kalakshetram to lay siege to the chief minister’s camp office in Vijayawada, demanding immediate solution to their long-pending grievances. The anganwadi workers on December 18 organised ’Chalo Vijayawada' programme to seek implementation of the wage hike assurance. The Chandrababu government reneged on its promise of implementing the wage hike from September 1 and dilly-dallying on the issue by saying that a cabinet sub-committee will look into the demand of wage hike.

Hunger: A Serious Problem under Contemporary Capitalism

THIS month the International Food Policy Research Institute has released the Global Hunger Index, 2015. The index clearly shows that even though the levels of hunger have declined since the turn of the last century, the number of hungry people in the world remains enormously large particularly in Africa, South of the Saharas and South Asia. Worldwide, the Food and Agriculture Organisation projects that there are 795 million hungry people, ie, one in every nine persons is hungry.
