“SITARAM Yechury’s untimely demise is no doubt a huge loss to the CPI(M)”, said veteran leader and NCP president Sharad Pawar, “but it is perhaps an even greater loss to the unity of secular forces. Just as he ably navigated the ship of his Party, he was instrumental in providing ideological clarity to bringing together most of the forces opposed to the BJP.”Sharad Pawar was addressing a packed audience that had gathered to pay homage to CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre at Mumbai, on September 24, 2024.
ON September 3, the Left Front organised a large march in Kolkata to demand justice and punishment for those involved in the RG Kar case. The protest was against corruption in healthcare and called for the resignation of the police and health minister.Led by Left Front chairman Biman Basu, CPI(M) state secretary Mohammad Salim, Polit Bureau member Surya Mishra, and Central Committee member Sujan Chakraborty, the massive march started at Rajabazar Tram Depot and headed toward RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
COMRADE Sitaram Yechury passed away on September 12, 2024, at AIIMS, New Delhi. It is still very difficult to reconcile with this shocking happening. His untimely demise is a great loss, not only to the country and the communist movement, but also to the broader movement of toiling people.This piece is not intended to evaluate the contributions of Comrade Sitaram or the leading role he played in people's movements and national politics – that is a collective task.
ANURA Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the Janata Vimukti Perumana (JVP) and the National Peoples’ Power (an alliance of Left and progressive parties) won the presidential elections held on September 21 in Sri Lanka. He polled 57,40,179 votes (42.3 per cent) in these elections, which is a significant increase from the 4,18,553 votes (3.16 per cent) he could obtain in 2019.

A MONTH ago, none of us could ever have imagined that such a sad day would come so suddenly. Sitaram Yechury’s passing on September 12, 2024 has created a deep void not only in the CPI(M), but also in all the left, democratic and secular forces in India.
