ON November 17, thousands of people marched through the streets of Athens and various other cities across Greece, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Polytechnic uprising. The march in Athens started from a large square near the Polytechnic, passed in front of the Greek Parliament, and concluded at the US embassy. Every year since 1974, on November 17th each year, a march to the US embassy is held to commemorate the heroic Polytechnic uprising.
THE CPI(M) made some headway in the limited gram panchayat elections held in Maharashtra on November 5, 2023. The results were declared next day on November 6. The sarpanch is now elected in the state through direct elections, with the whole village voting. Besides that, gram panchayat members are elected from various wards in the village. The CPI(M) won a total of 11 sarpanches and 133 gram panchayat members in these polls.The CPI(M) won the posts of 8 out of 13 sarpanches and 100 out of 167 gram panchayat seats in the Talasari and Dahanu tehsils of Palghar district.

ON November 6, 2023, the Joint Platform of ten central trade unions and independent national federations (CTUs) supported the demands and agitation of the ICF (Integral Coach Factory at Chennai) Joint Action Council opposing private sector’s entry in the ICF; and demanding withdrawal of the decision to handover manufacturing / maintenance of Vande Bharat trains to private sector within ICF premises.
THE mortal remains of N Sankaraiah, a founding member of the CPI(M), were cremated with state honors at the Besant Nagar crematorium in Chennai on November 16. The police rendered a gun salute to Sankaraiah, who passed away at the age of 102 in Chennai on the morning of November 15 after a brief illness. Upon learning of NS's demise, Party cadres from across the state rushed to Chennai in the thousands to pay their respects to the departed leader.
ON November 7, Communists worldwide commemorate the Socialist revolution led by Lenin. This year, on the same day, the renovated state committee office of the Tamil Nadu CPI(M) was inaugurated. ON Independence Day, August 15, Prime Minister Modi announced from the Red Fort that the government would allocate a package of loans amounting to Rs 13,000 to 15,000 crores, over the next five years, with a five per cent interest rate for the implementation of a new scheme, the Vishwakarma Yojana.
ANOTHER highway project in the Himalayan region, this time part of this government’s flagship Char Dham Highway, yet another tunnel, and one more disaster, fortunately with no casualties so far as this goes to print. 40 workers have been trapped for over 70 hours inside a 4.5 km railway tunnel under construction between Silkyara and Dandalgaon on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri portion, when the roof of the tunnel near the mouth collapsed in the early hours of Sunday, November 11, 2023.
COMRADE Suhrid Dutta, former member of CPI(M) Hooghly district committee and former secretary of Singur zonal committee, breathed his last on November 9, at his home in Apurbapur village. He had been unwell for a long time. He was 77 years old. He was unmarried and is survived by his elder brother, two younger sisters and two younger brothers. Comrade Dutta was currently a member of the Party's district centre branch.Comrade Suhrid Dutta was born in Bikrampur, Dhaka, in undivided Bengal. He was born on April 18, 1946. He moved to West Bengal with his family after partition.
