THE horrifying incident at R G Kar Medical College Hospital on August 9 was a global first. Never before has a doctor been raped and murdered on duty at a top government hospital. This wasn't a random act; it was the inevitable outcome of a crime wave fuelled by the ruling party's corruption in the state's health sector. Rampant corruption, nepotism, and embezzlement have crippled the health department in the last thirteen years, worsening after the 2021 elections. After the 2021 elections, corruption ran rampant, and crime spiralled out of control.
IN the name of cow protection, violent incidents of beating, kidnapping, and murder are increasing continuously in Haryana. On August 23, 19-year-old student Aryan Mishra was brutally murdered by so-called cow protectors in Faridabad, reportedly because he was mistaken for a cattle smuggler. Similarly, on August 27, 26-year-old Bengali migrant worker Sabir Malik, a rag picker living in a jhuggi (slum dwelling) in a village in Charkhi Dadri district, was lynched to death on allegations of cooking beef.
On September 14, the body of Comrade Sitaram Yechury will be kept at the Communist Party of India (Marxist) headquarters, A K Gopalan Bhavan, Gole Market, New Delhi for public viewing and paying homage between 11.00 am and 3.00 pm. Subsequently the body of Comrade Sitaram Yechury will be taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where it will be donated for medical research as per his wishes.

HEAVY rains in the catchment area caused the Krishna river and the Budameru rivulet to flood into Vijayawada city on the midnight of August 31. Heavy rainfall of about 30 cm locally, along with breaches to the banks of Budameru, led to the inundation of many low-lying areas such as Ajit Singh Nagar, Bhavanipuram, and others in Vijayawada city. Landslides occurred, resulting in the loss of four lives.
