POVERTY is taken to be a homogeneous phenomenon irrespective of the mode of production that is under consideration. Even reputed economists believe in this homogeneous conception of poverty. In fact, however, poverty under capitalism is entirely different from poverty in pre-capitalist times.
ANITHA was a brilliant child coming from a very poor family. Her father is a wage labourer. She was the youngest of five siblings. When she was in the second grade, her mother died due to lack of medical treatment. From that day on, Anitha dreamed of becoming a doctor. From her early years until twelfth grade, she was always first in her class. Before the implementation of NEET across the country, board exams were conducted on a state basis. Some states had Joint Entrance Exams while others admitted students based on twelfth-grade marks.Anitha scored 1176 out of 1200.

DOLOO is a nearly 200-year-old tea garden near Silchar city in Cachar district of lower Assam. A substantial part of the plantation area had been sold by the Doloo Tea Company to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for building a new airport. Tea plantation in this estate is spread over more than 1200 hectares and has four divisions namely Doloo, Moinagarh, Lalbagh and Murlidha. The Barak valley in Assam houses many such large tea gardens contributing a sizable quantity to tea exports from India.
The central trade unions – INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC, and various sectoral federations and associations have jointly addressed a letter to the minister of finance, Government of India, on June 24, outlining their viewpoints on the issues to be considered for framing the budget for the year 2024-2025.
IN false anticipation of a big victory for the BJP-NDA in the Lok Sabha elections, the police and administration of Palghar district, dancing to the tune of deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, had been threatening people, and bullying the common tribals including women. Harassment of CPI(M) activists by BJP goons, encroachment on their land, filing false cases against them was rampant. CPI(M) leaders were their main target. BJP goons and the police were working hand in hand, in a notoriously corrupt nexus.
ON June 24, 2024, a delegation of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Himachal Pradesh, including Rakesh Singha, Kuldip Singh Tanwar, and Sanjay Chauhan, met the 16th Finance Commission during their visit to the state. CPI(M) urged the 16th Finance Commission to prioritise Himachal Pradesh's unique challenges, including its rugged terrain, harsh climate, and reliance on the primary sector.
