Arrest Prof. M M Kalburgi's killers

PROFESSOR M M Kalburgi, a renowned Kannada scholar and writer, was shot dead at his residence in Dharwad of Karnataka in the morning of August 30, sending shock waves across the state as well as the country. This is the first case of a writer/scholar being killed in Karnataka, and in all likelihood due to the fear of “adverse impact” of his scholarship on communal discourse in the state.

Moral Policing by Sangh Goons Keeps Coastal Karnataka on Edge

AN 'invisible' government is ruling the coastal Karnataka. The 'visible' government is at their beck and call.  The flag-bearers of this 'invisible' government or Hindutva vanguard decide with whom a girl from their community may or may not associate. They have absolute authority to punish any Muslim boy seen in public with a Hindu girl. In such cases, the Muslim boy is assaulted and humiliated in any way they please. The Hindu girl, too, is insulted, manhandled and threatened, all in order to protect her ‘honour’.

US-Iran Nuclear Deal

IRAN and the United States have finally formalised the historic nuclear deal and signed a 159 page Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in the second week of July. It had taken the two sides 20 painstaking months to finally seal the deal. Both the sides had threatened to walk out on several occasions. There was a lot of give and take involved, with the Iranian side making the bulk of the concessions. The powerful pro-Israeli lobbies in the United States were working overtime to undermine the negotiations.

Modi Govt's Trident Attack on School Education

IN the run up to last year's general elections, BJP had promised the country a government that would have natural empathy towards the underprivileged and work for their empowerment as it would be run by a "poor chaiwala". However, three major steps taken by the BJP-led government within one year of assuming office make it clear that its policy is to ensure that the children of "chaiwalas" across the country never get a chance to go to school. As part of the "achhe din" policies of the Modi government, the education sector witnessed a budget cut of more than Rs 13,000 crore.

New wave of Resistance in West Bengal

SIGNS are evident enough; West Bengal is in resistance mood.Four and a half year after the change of government, the bitter experiences of the people are now getting crystallised. The all-out attack on opposition voices has spread to wider sections of the people. The state is ruled by the ruffians of the ruling party, from the grassroots level to the top. Economic condition of the state has gone from bad to worse with a completely rudderless government. Anarchy has become the rule of the day in education.

September 2 General Strike against Anti-Labour Policies

THE working class of India went on a historic countrywide General Strike on September 2, 2015 protesting against the anti-worker and anti-people policies of the BJP led government at the centre. The workers of the country have responded to the call of the Central Trade Unions and independent industrial federations for General Strike in an overwhelming and magnificent manner. This General Strike will remain a historic milestone in the history of the trade union movement of the country.

Education: The Threat of Unfreedom

OF late, news headlines have been hogged by the continuing struggle by the students of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).  The students’ protest was in opposition to imposition of Gajendra Chauhan as chairman of the institute and three other members in the governing council.  The outrage has, of course, gone far beyond this exalted institute and shared by large number of film professionals and the creative community.

Behind The Volatile Market

INDIA’S stock market is passing through a volatile phase. While the 1625 point collapse of the Sensex on August 24, 2015, which was the largest decline in six years, was followed by a return to stability and even moderate buoyancy, the mere announcement of a half of a percentage point decline in the quarterly GDP growth rate during April to June, was enough to precipitate a more than 500 point decline on September 1, 2015.
