Capitalist Crisis, Right to Strike, and Teachings of Lenin

RIGHTS achieved by the working class all over the world are the result of bitter class struggles and sacrifices and not as mercy from any quarter. And this is equally true both for industrial and public services workers. In fact, trade union movement and right to strike are synonymous. It can be said that right to strike is the birthright of workers. The working class cannot forego right to collective bargaining including right to strike, whatever may be the circumstances. To paraphrase Lenin, strike is the most powerful weapon of democratic trade union movement.

In Support of AR Rahman

The following is the statement supporting AR Rahman, issued by SAHMAT on September 17.

WE welcome and whole-heartedly support the statement of musician AR Rahman where he speaks about his decision to compose music for the Iranian film ‘Muhammad: Messenger of God”’. He has thoughtfully struck the right note as he has answered questions raised (completely out of line) by the Raza Academy, about why he chose to compose songs for the film.

Struggle of Women Workers

Women workers fight for more and better jobs, end to discrimination ONE of the defining features of India’s working class, and perhaps an in-built obstacle to its advance, is that women are either confined to the most ill-paid, insecure and vulnerable jobs, or they are simply kept out of the workforce. In the organiSed sector, women’s share in employment was just 18.6 percent in 2012-13, according to the latest Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) report.

The Dengue Epidemic & Demise of Public Healthcare

THE tragic events culminating in the suicide of the parents of Avinash, a seven year old child who had succumbed to dengue fever, largely due to the apathy of a number of private hospitals, have laid bare the pathetic condition of health care services in Delhi. Subsequent to a public outcry, the Delhi Government has announced a slew of measures to mitigate the impact of the current Dengue epidemic in Delhi. It is natural for a feeling of deja vu to engulf us as we watch the consequences of the Dengue epidemic unfold.

The State and the Left

THE Maoist attitude to the Indian State is clear; engaged in an armed struggle to overthrow the Indian State, the Maoists see this State as their enemy. What about that segment of the Left, however, which is not engaged in armed struggle, but participates in parliamentary elections, occasionally forms governments at the state level, and functions in accordance with the Constitution? Does it find the current Indian State acceptable?

Assam: CPI(M) Opposes Centre’s Move on Bangladeshi Migrants

THE CPI(M) Assam State Committee has strongly objected to the Modi government’s unilateral and arbitrary move to grant Indian citizenship to all Hindu refugees from Pakistan and Bangladesh. The Party said the decision, taken on communal considerations without taking into consideration the people of Assam and various political parties and organisations, has made provisions of the Assam Accord completely irrelevant and meaningless and will endanger the unity and integrity of Assam.
