OSTENSIBLY to liberate the Indian legal system from its colonial past, the Modi-led BJP government introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha aimed at revamping the existing criminal laws. The bills targeted the Indian Penal Code (1860), the Code of Criminal Procedure (1973), and the Indian Evidence Act (1872), two of which date back to the British era.

Manipur: CPI(M) Condemns Lilong Incident, Calls for Swift Action

THE CPI(M) Manipur state secretariat met on January 2 to address the current state of affairs following the May 3 incident. The gathering observed two minutes of silence in remembrance of the four people who lost their lives in the Lilong Chingjao incident on New Year, perpetrated by unidentified gunmen.

Jharkhand: CPI(M) Holds Public Hearings on People’s Issues

AFTER holding public hearings on various issues concerning the people of the Santal Pargana division of Jharkhand from December 19 to 22, the CPI(M) has resolved to hold a month-long campaign in the panchayats of the four districts – Godda, Sahebganj, Pakur and Deoghar – comprising the division, in January 2024.The first public hearing was conducted at the mining project site of Rajmahal Opencast Coal Project, of Coal India's ECL company, in Godda district. Hundreds of farmers who had given their land for mining work gathered there.

Tripura: Janashiksha Samity and Ganamukti Parishad Foundation Days Observed

THE weeklong observance of the 79th anniversary of Janashiksha Samity and the 75th foundation day of Tripura Rajya Ganamukti Parishad (GMP) commenced throughout the state on December 27. Party and GMP flags were hoisted in all Party offices, accompanied by floral tributes to the legendary founding leaders. Various programmes have been planned at the sub-division level, including hall meetings and processions.In Agartala, responding to the call of the GMP, TYF, and TSU, an overflowing hall meeting took place at Town Hall on December 27.

HP: First State Conference of Apple Growers Association

THE first state conference of the Himachal Apple Growers Association took place on December 24-25, 2023, at Rampur in the Shimla district in which 92 delegates from 16 blocks participated. Revoke Draconian Penalties on Drivers: AIRTWF

THE All India Road Transport Workers’ Federation (AIRTWF), in a statement issued on January 2, has demanded that the Government of India immediately withdraw Section 104(1) & (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sannihita 2023. The federation expresses concern over the proposed penalties of up to 10 years in jail and fines up to Rs 10 lakhs for drivers involved in fatal accidents.
