THE Kerala state government has deployed as many as 2.36 lakh youths to combat Covid-19 in the state. All volunteers, in the age group of 22-40 years will work in groups of 200 people in each of the 941 panchayats across the state, said chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on March 26. Groups of 5,000 volunteers each will work in the 87 municipalities and 600 each would render services in the six corporations in the state.

Community Transmission of the coronavirus seems to be very possibly well underway and India is now in what was being referred to as stage 3. While there were clear weaknesses in containment during stage 2, notably delays in restrictions on air passengers entering India and weaknesses particularly in effective home quarantine measures, community transmission was almost inevitable.

THE people and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala had put up a united fight against the deadly Nipah virus when it gripped the state two years ago and earned laurels for their efforts. In a similar fashion, as per the directions of the LDF government, the state healthcare network has been working in full swing as soon as the first case of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) was reported.

THE volunteers under the banner of the Delhi Solidarity Relief and Rehabilitation Committee have reached out to as many as 25-30,000 people through the relief work in the riot affected North-East Delhi. It has finished surveys in more than 350 households to assess the loss incurred due to riots. The preliminary analysis from the survey would hopefully provide us a correct picture of the material damage the violence has inflicted upon people. The survey was done with the help of more than 250 volunteers.
