AIAWU Holds Day-Night Dharnas across Bengal

ON June 1, after months of confronting an administration unwilling to negotiate, agricultural labourers, including women, from different villages sat on dharnas (sit-in protests) outside the offices of the concerned panchayats. The  All India Agricultural Workers ' Union (AIAWU) organised the dharna-deputation programme in panchayats across the state on June 1, demanding resumption of 100 days work, payment of arrear wages, release of money for  houses to be built under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) and other related issues.

Kerala's Rubber Farmers Unite: Parliament March Planned for Sept 14

ON May 26, 2023, more than 10,000 rubber farmers from all over Kerala, led by the Kerala Karshaka Sangham (AIKS), marched to the Raj Bhawan at Thiruvananthapuram. The rubber farmers' march began from Asan Square near Kerala University and marched up to the Raj Bhawan.AIKS president Ashok Dhawale, general secretary Vijoo Krishnan, Karshaka Sangham general secretary Valsan Panoli, president M Vijayakumar, AIKS vice president SK    Preeja, and others marched with the farmers. CITU, AIAWU, AIDWA, SFI, and DYFI also marched in solidarity.

Swiggy Workers on Warpath

SWIGGY, is an Indian online food ordering and delivery platform and a subsidiary of Bundl Technologies of Bengaluru. It was floated in 2014 and currently operates in more than 500 cities in India, and has around 6,000 employees. About 1,100 workers are hired as office and restaurant staff, and the rest as delivery persons.Besides food, the app provides grocery deliveries and a same-day package delivery service.

Kerala: K-FON Provides Free Internet to Economically Backward Families

The publicly owned K-FON was conceived to provide a free internet connection to 20 lakh BPL families to end the digital divide and ensure access to the internetEIGHT tribal families in the Panthalakudu Colony in Kaniyambetta village panchayat in Wayanad district have a high-speed internet connection at their homes. Around 2,000 families have the free connection, while 17,000 government offices are now connected to the facility.

Weeklong May Day Celebrations in Telangana

MAY Day celebrations in Telangana have transformed from mere customary events to occasions that have all-round participation of the working class and the people at large. The special initiatives introduced last year have further enhanced the celebrations this year. It goes without saying that the customary practices, such as adorning decorations with red flags and the attendance of workers at meetings and demonstrations wearing red shirts and sarees on May Day, continue to be observed. These were observed this year as well.

LIC Agents Hold Sixth National Conference

THE sixth All India Conference of LIC Agents’ Organisation of India (LICAOI-CITU) was held at Alluri Seetharamaraju Vignana Kendram in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh from May 22 to 23.A massive rally was held with thousands of agents, which culminated at the public grounds opposite the LIC Divisional Office on the first day of the conference. A public meeting was organised after the rally, and it was chaired by  L Manjunath, vice president of LICAOI.

(On May 26, 2023, Viduthalai, the Tamil daily edited by K Veeramani, president of the Dravida Kazhagam, reproduced an interesting and revealing essay in literary journalism published in the Tamil weekly, Dravida Nadu, on August 24, 1947. The subject was the significance of the presentation of the Sengol (‘Golden Sceptre’) by emissaries of the pontiff of the Thiruvaduthurai Adheenam, a Saivite mutt in Tamil Nadu, to the incoming prime minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru, at his home on August 14, 1947.
