Reality of an Alternative Exists in Bengal: Interview with Surjya Kanta Mishra

THERE is a palpable change in the present situation in West Bengal. There will be a triangular fight in the forthcoming assembly elections as there is a corporeal chance of defeating both the central and state ruling dispensations. We will have to implement alternative policies. And this alternative can only be provided by Left, democratic, secular forces. In an interview to Ganashakti, CPI(M) state secretary Surjya Mishra said this to Prasun Bhattacharya.

MOHD Yousuf Tarigami, member of the Central Committee of the CPI(M) is the first political leader from the valley of Kashmir to have been able to come out of detention after the intervention of the Supreme Court. A habeas corpus writ petition was filed by Sitaram Yechury, general secretary of the Party in the SC to produce Tarigami. However, the SC asked Yechury to visit Tarigami and file an affidavit in the SC regarding his health. After filing of the affidavit, the SC allowed Tarigami to visit Delhi and undergo treatment in the AIIMS.

CPI(M) central committee member and Jammu and Kashmir MLA Md. Yusuf Tarigami was in Delhi in the beginning of the week to meet leaders of national parties and seek their intervention in bringing Kashmir back from the brink. Among others, he met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, along with CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, on July 20. The turmoil in Kashmir, which erupted following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in an encounter on July 8, has claimed over 40 lives and left more than 3400 injured.
