THE Delhi Lt Governor’s recent intervention to overturn the order of the Delhi government regarding the panel of lawyers in cases related to the communal violence in Delhi raises several questions.This team appointed by the LG which had been earlier suggested by the Delhi police themselves consists of senior standing counsel of the central government led by the most trusted law officer of the central ruling regime, the solicitor general Tushar Mehta. Such an appointment is way beyond the reach of the Delhi police or the LG.

People of Jammu & Kashmir Humiliated

THE people of Jammu and Kashmir had opted to become part of secular India rather than the Muslim Pakistan not simply by virtue of the Instrument of Accession which is the legal basis of the association, but more importantly because of those promises of building a pluralist, secular India in which the people of J&K were to have a very special status and maximum autonomy. Those promises were contained in Article 370 of the Indian constitution and in the constitution of J&K itself.

Rumble on Railway Tracks: Why Privatise Indian Railways?

THE media is agog with stories about rail privatisation. The ministry of railways has sought private players’ request for qualification for 151 trains running on 109 rail routes. Howrah-Delhi, Howrah-Chennai, Howrah-Mumbai and Delhi-Mumbai are among the routes to be privatised. The lifelines of Mumbai and Kolkata, the suburban trains, will also be given to private entities.

THE finance minister, in her article captioned “Bold decisions pronounced under PM Modi” in Times of India, dated July 14, 2020, has praised the former prime minister, Narsimha Rao for his immense political will for dismantling the four decade old command and control model. Nirmala Sitharaman, in this article, has glorified several policy decisions of the governments headed by A B Vajpayee and Narendra Modi. Truly these policy decisions were responsible to take the country's economy towards pro-corporate and were against the interest of the common man.
