Govt Blind to Plight of Rural Labour Even as Real Wages Fall

As many as 14 crore agri-labourers make up the biggest economic class in India – and the poorestIN the recently presented Economic Survey for 2022-23, tucked away in the verbiage and data, there is a nugget of information that should shock the conscience of all Indians, whether ruling BJP supporters or not. According to the calculations done by the government’s own economists, real wages – that is, wages adjusted to inflation – of rural labourers are either stagnating or showing a marginal fall over the past over two years.

Adani: Saga of Fraud, Manipulation and Unprecedented Official Patronage

ALL hell has broken loose. It is bloodbath of Adani group’s publicly traded shares. And it continues to bleed since the 129-page report by Hindenburg Research which flagged concerns about the conglomerate’s debt levels and use of tax havens was made public. Hindenburg’s claim that Indian tycoon Gautam Adani has overseen “largest con in corporate history” is stinging.

Whither Republic

EVERY Republic Day makes us realise how far we have advanced since founding of our republic. A fundamental premise of our constitution which, in the first place, was enshrined to realise the aspirations of our freedom struggle – a State with common citizenship irrespective of caste, creed, language and culture.

Shocking Inequality: Richest 21 Indian billionaires have more wealth than 70 crore Indians

JUST 5 per cent of Indians own more than 60 per cent of the country’s wealth while the bottom 50 per cent of India’s population possess only three per cent of the wealth. From 2012 to 2021, 40 per cent of the wealth created in India has gone to just one per cent of the population and only a mere 3 per cent of the wealth has gone to the bottom 50 per cent.

The Bhagwat Interview: Update of Hindutva

THE RSS chief, Mohan Bhagwat in an interview to the editors of the RSS publications, Organiser and the Panchjanya (January 15,) dealt with a range of questions. Bhagwat’s comments should be taken as the 2023 update of the writings of RSS founders like Hedgewar and Golwalkar for the building of a Hindu Rashtra. He says “Hindustan is a Hindu rashtra. This prosperous and powerful Hindu society—Hindu Rashtra—Bharat—will reach to the pinnacle of its glory and provide leadership to the world.” The RSS spelled out its project when India was a British colony.

Pincer Attack: The Communal Corporate Raid on Higher Education

BEFORE the dust has settled over the brazen attempt by the UGC to anchor a campaign titled ‘India: The Mother of Democracy’ a second salvo has been fired. UGC seeks to set out a Hindutva narrative of the Indian past over the last 5,000 years. As espoused by the likes of Savarkar and Golwalkar, it reduces the complex genesis of India of interface and assimilation of many diverse traditions.

Jobless Numbers are Touching Five Crore

Labour force has still not recovered to pre-pandemic levels, according to CMIE.LATEST estimates put the number of unemployed in India at over five crore. These estimates, made by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), are drawn from periodic sample surveys carried out by the consultancy.

Kerala on the Path of Growth and Development

KERALA'S economy achieved a commendable growth rate of 12.8 per cent for the financial year 2021-22, according to the report of the National Statistical Office, released on November 15, 2022. That this translates into an increase of 14.4 per cent compared to the growth rate of the pre-pandemic year 2018-19, adds more glitter to Kerala's accomplishment. There is one more reason to highlight the growth performance of the state, which is that the manufacturing sector emerges as the second largest growing sub-sector next to mining and quarrying during this period.

Digital Currency: Need To Tread Cautiously

THE Reserve Bank of India (RBI), being the central bank of our country, came out with a concept note on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) on October 7, 2022. Within a month of issuance of this note which was intended to create awareness about the digital currency among the general public, RBI has come out hurriedly with the pilot issuance of whole sale CBDC on November 1, 2022; further retail digital currency has been introduced on December 1, 2022.

UGC Circular: A Constitutionally Untenable & an Invasion on Historical Imagination

THE UGC circular signed by M Jagdish Kumar,  former vice chancellor of JNU whose infamy for undermining  democracy and critical thinking in the university had been widely covered by the media. Therefore, his appointment as the UGC chairman did not surprise many. Now that he is anchoring the effort to legitimise narratives of Hindutva proponents like Savarkar and Golwalkar in the  official academic space of Indian universities, it only betrays his place in the hierarchy of the scheme of things that RSS and Hindutva forces plan to unleash in the sphere of higher education.
