Kerala: Vijayan to be Leader of Opposition

CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan has been elected as the leader of the CPI(M) legislature party in Kerala. The decision was made unanimously during the CPI(M) State Committee meeting held over two days in Thiruvananthapuram. The meeting was chaired by Central Committee member K Radhakrishnan. State Secretary M V Govindan announced in a press release that General Secretary M A Baby, and Polit Bureau members Pinarayi Vijayan and A Vijayaraghavan attended the session.

Vijayan led the last two governments that secured the first-ever consecutive term for the LDF in Kerala’s history, setting records in development and welfare activities. Earlier, as the electricity minister in the E K Nayanar cabinet, his reforms empowered Kerala to overcome its power crisis. After becoming chief minister in 2016, he realised the Kochi-Edamon highway project, saving Kerala from power cuts and load shedding. His 10-year tenure was marked by a great leap for Kerala, including the GAIL pipeline project, National Highway 66, Vizhinjam Port, and extraordinary achievements in the public education and public health sectors.

Despite the so-called “storm” of public support in favour of the UDF, Vijayan is entering the Assembly for the seventh time after securing a notable victory. He has already made it clear that while he will cooperate with the UDF government’s pro-people development and welfare activities, he will not accept — and will instead resist — any decisions that are detrimental to the public.
