Punjab: Jatha Launched from Historic Village Linked to Ghadar Movement
Balbir Singh
A Jatha was flagged off from Sur Singh village in Tarn Taran district, the native village of the revolutionary Ghadari Babas who made immense sacrifices in India’s freedom struggle through the Ghadar Movement. The jatha aimed to mobilise workers, farmers and democratic sections of society against the anti-people policies of the central government.
Addressing the gathering, Nilotpal Basu, Polit Bureau Member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and former member of the Rajya Sabha, strongly criticised the pro-corporate policies of the government. He highlighted the harmful impact of the new Labour Codes on workers’ rights and demanded the restoration and strengthening of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) to ensure employment security for rural labourers.
Sukhwinder Singh Sekhon, State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Punjab, also addressed the gathering. He called for the withdrawal of the VB GRAMG law and opposed the Electricity Bill 2025, the Seed Bill, and policies promoting free trade agreements, which threaten the interests of farmers, workers and the common people.
The speakers urged people to unite against these policies and called for massive participation in the rally to be held on March 24, at Ramlila Maidan, New Delhi.
Among those present were Satnam Singh Wadhaich, Major Singh Bhikiwind, and Jatinder Pal Singh, all State Committee members of CPI(M) Punjab.
