The Nexus: Engineering an Ethno-State
Samik Lahiri
THE 'Democratic Republic' enshrined in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution faces an existential crisis. In recent years, a meticulously planned assault on the electoral system has surfaced, using the facade of 'logical discrepancies' to terrorise millions of voters. This campaign specifically targets religious minorities and the impoverished. The Election Commission of India (ECI), once a bastion of constitutional neutrality, has abdicated its autonomy to become a subservient tool of the RSS-BJP-led central government. This is not merely a violation of the Representation of the People Act; it is a frontal assault on the 'Basic Structure' of the Constitution.
THE LABYRINTH OF DATA AND
MANUFACTURED TERROR
Maintaining transparency in the electoral process is the ECI's foremost constitutional mandate. Yet, a glaring chasm has emerged between voter turnout and final tally data. These so-called 'logical discrepancies' are not technical glitches; they are political weapons. The systematic deletion of names from voter lists in minority-concentrated and backward regions is a classic neo-fascist tactic. In BJP-ruled states, millions are being coerced into a state of perpetual fear regarding their citizenship. These discrepancies serve as the precursor to 'D-Voter' status or the NRC, weaponised to strip the marginalised of their franchise in direct contempt of Article 324.
THE EROSION OF
SEPARATION OF POWERS
The Indian Constitution rests on the delicate balance between the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary. The current regime has systematically dismantled this equilibrium. The ECI, instead of resolving electoral disputes, is deliberately dragging the Judiciary into political quagmires to shield itself from accountability. By hiding behind legal technicalities, the Commission is abdicating its administrative duties, effectively forcing judicial overreach. Under the directives of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, the ECI has transformed into an extension of the PMO rather than a body accountable to the Constitution and the people.
STRATEGIC DISENFRANCHISEMENT
OF THE MARGINALISED
The Representation of the People Act, 1951, mandates the protection of every adult citizen's right to vote, irrespective of caste, religion, or economic status. The RSS-directed central government is trampling upon this mandate through a) Targeted Disenfranchisement: Strategic manipulation of polling booth locations in minority areas to discourage turnout. b) Social Exclusion: Using administrative red tape to exclude Dalits, Tribals, and migrant labourers—who often lack the ‘standard’ documentation demanded by a biased bureaucracy. c) Technological Sabotage: Introducing 'technical errors' in voter lists at the eleventh hour to prevent opposition voters from exercising their rights.
The recent suspension of 60 lakh voters in West Bengal under the guise of 'logical discrepancies' is a blatant violation of Article 326. It is an unconstitutional move to alter the democratic outcome of entire constituencies before a single ballot is cast.
THE ACCOUNTABILITY OF THE
PRIME MINISTER AND HOME MINISTER
This is not a series of isolated incidents; it is a coordinated political agenda. Universal suffrage is the primary obstacle to the RSS’s vision of a ‘Hindu Rashtra’. When the masses demand bread, jobs, and democratic rights, the BJP’s politics of polarisation falters. Therefore, their strategy is to mentally and legally cripple the opposition electorate before the actual electoral battle begins. We are witnessing a 'Constitutional Coup' orchestrated from the highest offices of the land.
THE JUDICIARY: A MIRAGE OF REDRESS
The protracted delays in Supreme Court hearings regarding electoral discrepancies have inadvertently provided the RSS-BJP nexus with a golden opportunity. Entrusting the verification of 60 lakhs records to a few hundred judges is a mathematical absurdity — an 'administrative mirage'. This deliberate bottleneck ensures that by the time a legal remedy is found, the elections will have passed, rendering the justice moot. This is not mere inefficiency; it is a calculated ploy to use the Judiciary as a shield for neo-fascist agendas.
THE DUPLICITY OF THE TRINAMOOL CONGRESS
In West Bengal, the decay of democracy has taken a unique form. The Mamata Banerjee-led administration has reduced the state bureaucracy to a personal militia. From BDOs to District Magistrates, officials take orders from Kalighat (Residence of the CM) rather than the Constitution. This administrative spinelessness has forced the Judiciary to intervene in routine governance, a sign of the total collapse of public trust in state institutions. While the TMC leadership performs a drama of opposition against the BJP, their autocratic administrative model serves the RSS agenda. By fostering administrative paralysis and failing to protect voter lists, the TMC provides the BJP with the very ground it needs to advance. The TMC’s ‘pseudo-opposition’ is merely a regional variant of neo-fascism, sacrificing the rights of the marginalised to maintain its own local hegemony.
THE LEFT’S CALL TO ACTION
The fight against fascism cannot be confined to courtrooms or polite petitions. We must integrate fierce, sustained mass movements with legal challenges. The Left has always been the vanguard of democratic rights. Today, Left-wing activists must act as the ultimate sentinels — from the revision of voter lists to the final counting of votes. We must demystify the 'logical discrepancy' fraud for the common man. We must demand the restoration of the ECI's independence and challenge its autocratic conduct in every High Court and the Supreme Court.
The Constitution is a living entity, but when the 'protectors' turn 'predators', the onus of protection falls on the people. ‘Save the Constitution, Save Democracy’ is no longer a slogan — it is a battle cry for survival. The time for symbolic rallies has passed; the hour of the mass blockade has arrived.
We must remember that power does not concede, and democratic rights are never ‘gifted’ by the oppressor —they are wrested back through the raw, unyielding force of mass struggle.
