CPI(M) demands transparency and fairness in Utttar Pradesh SIR
Nawab Uddin
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) Uttar Pradesh raised several important points regarding the process of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls at the multi-party meeting held by the Chief Electoral Officer, Uttar Pradesh on October 29, 2025, and demanded transparency and fairness in the process.
CPI(M) representatives stated that the Central Election Commission's announcement of the SIR without consulting political parties is unfair. The party urged the Commission to act impartially and take concrete action by seriously considering the issues raised by political parties.
The party demanded that no genuine voter should be excluded from the list during the SIR. The party also submitted written suggestions to the Commission, including not harassing voters who had moved to other districts after 2003 and ensuring that all BLOs conduct door-to-door verification, rather than filling out forms at a single location.
The CPI(M) stressed the need for special caution in Dalit and minority settlements and in urban slum areas. The party stated that a thorough investigation of all facts should be conducted before deleting eligible voters' names, so that no one's rights are violated. The party pointed out that the SIR process is cumbersome and needs to be simplified.
The CPI(M) also demanded that the names added to the voter list should be thoroughly verified, and that BLOs should work impartially without any political pressure. The list of volunteers should be publicly published.
The Commission was also urged to take concrete steps to curb rumors on social media. To avoid confusion among voters, the CPI(M) emphasised the need for widespread publicity regarding the 2003 voter list and the changed assembly constituencies after delimitation. It also demanded that polling booths be set up in areas near residences.
State Secretariat member Comrade B. L. Bharti and State Committee member Comrade Nawab Uddin participated in the meeting on behalf of the party.
The CPI(M) expressed hope that the Election Commission would seriously consider the suggestions and ensure the voter list revision process was transparent, fair, and in the public interest. It emphasised the need for periodic meetings with political parties.
