CITU Condemns Dismissal of Gramin Dak Sevak Union General Secretary

Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has condemned the dismissal of S. S. Mahadevaiah, General Secretary of All India Gramin Dak Sevak Union (AIGDSU), affiliated to the National Federation of Postal Employees (NFPE), as an atrocious vindictive action of the Postal Department and of the Government of India, which has been dictating terms even in respect of day-to-day administrative management.

The action of dismissal just for leading a Dak Sevaks strike against the anti-employees policies of the government and for the genuine long pending demands of the postal employees is an act of threatening the employees for asserting their constitutional rights and aimed at demolishing their right to collective assertion.

The present Union Government enacted The Post Offices Act 2023 in line with the neo-liberal policy framework servile to private corporates in order to pave the way for the ultimate privatisation of the postal services presently run by the government. This is going to further its authoritarian onslaught on all dissent and protest in defence of Indian economy. This action of vindictive dismissal is part of such an authoritarian onslaught.

Strikes by employees for their genuine labour rights and demands, against privatisation and in defence of the postal services under the government are the basic constitutional right of all employees and their organisations. The action of strike is always a last option when the government fails to democratically resolve the issues raised by the employees. The present government has illegally derecognised the NFPE and is not implementing the court directions to recognise it. It is on a spree to vindictively victimise employees and union leaders for pursuing the rights of employees and their unions to raise their collective voice against privatisation of basic services.

CITU General Secretary Tapan Sen has urged the Department of Posts and other concerned authorities under the Central Government to rescind the dismissal order immediately and has extended full support and solidarity to actions of postal employees against the dismissal order.
