A&N: CPI(M) to Intensity Agitation on People’s Issues
D Ayyappan
THE CPI(M) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will launch agitations on various issues affecting the islanders. The decision was taken during the meetings of the state secretariat and state organising committee held on July 12, at Shaheed Bhavan, Anarkali, Port Blair – the state headquarters of the Party.
The Party resolved to expose the failures of the BJP-led central government and its local administration in addressing the problems plaguing the power, roads, health, and shipping sectors in the islands. As part of this agitation, the CPI(M) will conduct a Raj Nivas March on August 22, 2025 in Port Blair, where a memorandum highlighting the difficulties faced by islanders will be submitted to the Lt. Governor. Prior to this, an extensive campaign will be carried out across the islands.
The meetings also reviewed the political situation and various issues affecting the people. A plan for implementing the tasks of the 24th Party Congress was also presented by the D Ayyappan, state secretary. The Party also decided to expand its activities in the islands by mobilising more people from class and mass organisations into its fold.
The meeting also adopted a resolution urging the Government of India to establish a Legislative Assembly in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on the Pondicherry model, allowing greater public participation in governance. Currently, the Union Territory is administered solely by a Lt. Governor and officers appointed by the central government. The earlier 30-member Pradesh Council, introduced in 1979 through the Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Administration) Regulation under the Janata Party government following the persistent demands of veteran trade union leader Comrade PKS Prasad, was abolished by the Narasimha Rao government in 1994.
Expressing serious concern, the Party condemned the widespread corruption, mismanagement, and nepotism in the Andaman & Nicobar State Cooperative Bank Ltd, allegedly controlled by the Congress Party with overt and covert support from the BJP and the central government.
