MP: CPI(M) Protests US Attack on Iran, Condemns Modi Government’s Silence

THE Madhya Pradesh state committee of CPI(M) organised a protest in Gwalior on June 13 condemning the unprovoked attack on Iran by the United States at 1:40 a.m. Indian time, on June 13. The protest rally, which began in the afternoon, culminated at the High Court Square. Party General Secretary M A Baby participated in the protest and addressing the gathering, he described the US attack as a barbaric and criminal act that flagrantly violated international law.

Baby criticised the Modi-led Indian government’s stand as disappointing and contrary to the longstanding traditions of India’s foreign policy. He demanded that the Indian government unequivocally condemn the US attack. Baby reminded the public that Iran has consistently been a friend to India and has stood by the country in difficult times. In a moment when Iran's sovereignty is under attack, India should stand with it. However, under pressure from US President Donald Trump, the Modi government appears to be siding with the United States, thereby ruining India’s international credibility and reputation.

Exposing the false narrative used by the US to justify the attack, Baby noted that American intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard had admitted – first in March, then again in May before a committee of US parliamentarians, and most recently on June 17 – that Iran neither possesses a nuclear bomb nor the capability to produce one. In light of this, he questioned the rationale behind the military assault.

He further cited Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who stated just two days ago that Iran is not producing a nuclear weapon and is fully cooperating with inspections of its nuclear facilities. Iran, Baby emphasized, is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) – an international treaty for disarmament – and has never reneged on its commitments. Under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) signed with the five permanent members of the UN namely the US, Russia, China, France, and the UK – Iran had assured it would not pursue nuclear weapons. Iran continues to abide by this agreement. Therefore, Baby asserted, the US attack is aimed at asserting dominance over the entire Central Asia and intimidating the whole world.

He also drew parallels with the Iraq invasion, reminding the participants that the US and its imperialist allies had fabricated similar lies then. After destroying an ancient civilization, they admitted their intelligence was faulty. Now, the same deception is being repeated with Iran.

M A Baby also condemned the ongoing genocide in Gaza over the past two years, in which more than 60,000 civilians, including women and children, have been killed. He demanded that the Indian government stand in solidarity with Palestine and appealed to the Indian people to raise their voices against these acts of aggression.

CPI(M) Polit Bureau member R Arun Kumar also addressed the protest, emphasizing that India’s foreign policy has historically opposed war. He recalled that Prime Minister Modi himself recently stated, “This is not the time for war.” Arun Kumar urged Modi to stand by his own words and speak out clearly against the attack on Iran and the continuing genocide in Palestine.

CPI(M) Madhya Pradesh state secretary and Central Committee member Jaswinder Singh, along with CPI(ML) Liberation senior leader Guru Dutt Sharma, also addressed the demonstration.
