Kerala: Thousands Rally in Thrissur Against Politically Motivated ED Actions on CPI(M)
IN a powerful display of mass resistance, thousands gathered in Thrissur for a public protest organised by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Kerala state committee on May 28, voicing sharp opposition to the politically motivated actions by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against the Party and its leaders in connection with the Karuvannur case.
The protest was inaugurated by CPI(M) Polit Bureau member A Vijayaraghavan, who strongly condemned the misuse of central investigative agencies to target opposition parties. "This is not an investigation – it is a political witch-hunt aimed at weakening the Left in Kerala, especially the CPI(M), which has consistently resisted the communal and authoritarian agenda of the central government," he said to thunderous applause.
Vijayaraghavan emphasized that the CPI(M) would not be intimidated by the ED’s selective targeting. “Our Party has a long history of struggle, and we will face this attack head-on. The people of Kerala know the truth and are standing with us.”
The Karuvannur case, which involves allegations of financial irregularities at a cooperative bank, has been repeatedly used by the ED to summon CPI(M) leaders and functionaries. The probe has taken a distinctly partisan turn, focusing on tarnishing the Party’s image ahead of upcoming elections.
Protestors waving red flags, carryied placards reading "Stop the Political Vendetta", "Hands Off Our Cooperatives", and "ED is Not Above the Constitution."
The protest stressed the importance of defending Kerala’s strong cooperative movement, which has long been a cornerstone of the state's pro-people development model.
