Himachal Farmers Reject New Agricultural Policies
DESPITE heavy snowfall, farmers gathered to burn copies of the newly proposed National Agricultural Market Policy, which threatens their livelihoods. Kuldeep Singh Tanwar, state president of the Kisan Sabha, addressed the protestors, sharply criticising the Modi-led NDA government for its anti-farmer stance since taking power. He pointed out that although over 500 farmer organisations had successfully secured the repeal of the three dangerous farm laws, the new policy appeared to reintroduce those laws under a different guise, endangering farmers once again.
The memorandum, submitted to President Droupadi Murmu, via Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, called for an end to the repression of farmers, the release of those imprisoned under false charges, and the immediate withdrawal of the National Agricultural Market Policy, the Digital Agriculture Mission, and the National Cooperative Policy. The protest also condemned the government for breaching its agreement with the Samyukt Kisan Morcha in December 2021 and for continuing to use force to suppress peaceful farmer movements.
Farmers see the new agricultural policy as a corporate-driven attempt to reintroduce the three black farm laws under a different name. The Kisan Sabha demanded the government to address long-standing farmer concerns, including the implementation of a Minimum Support Price (MSP), loan waivers, and the full enforcement of the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement (LARR) Act of 2013. Several organisations, including the Himachal Apple Growers Association, Dairy Producers Association, and the CITU, expressed solidarity with the farmers' cause by participating in the protest.
In addition to Shimla, similar protests were held in Rampur, Balichoki, Jogindernagar, Kullu, Kangra, and Nahan, where hundreds of farmers rallied in support.
