The Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala has staged a major protest on December 5, against the union government’s neglect of Kerala in the wake of the Wayanad tragedy. The protest included a march to Raj Bhavan and demonstrations at union government offices across district centres. The state government has proposed a rehabilitation scheme for Wayanad, designed as a township, and sought central assistance for its implementation. However, the union government has refused to declare it a national disaster, undermining the need for immediate support. The prime minister visited Wayanad to assess the situation, but the refusal to declare it a national disaster reveals the visit as nothing more than a public relations stunt. The union government’s response has been insufficient in addressing the scale of the tragedy. The union government is not only neglecting the urgent need for aid to rebuild the landslide-ravaged Wayanad but is also blocking the potential for additional support by failing to classify the tragedy as an L3-level national disaster. This is a serious setback for recovery efforts.
