WB: CPI (M) Demands Answers & Action in Abhaya Case: Protest March to CBI Office

THE Trinamool and BJP are intertwined in their political interests, leading to a stagnant CBI investigation into the RG Kar Hospital brutal rape and murder case. This is not the first time that such a thing has happened. Past corruption cases in Bengal that were put under CBI probe have followed a similar trajectory. On November 21, CPI(M) leaders voiced these concerns during a protest march to the CBI office in Salt Lake. Later Md Salim, Party state secretary headed a delegation and submitted a memorandum to the investigating CBI officer, stating that the public is tired of the farcical investigation. He emphasized the need to go beyond superficial inquiries and expose the real culprits behind the scene. Salim warned that if the CBI and Supreme Court fail to deliver justice, people will take to the streets.
On November 21, a massive march organised by the CPI(M) state committee commenced from Ultadanga at 1:45 pm. Adorned with red flags, posters, and festoons, the rally vociferously questioned the role of both the state police and the CBI in shielding the perpetrators of the heinous rape and murder at the RG Kar Hospital. Slogans like "How much more time do you need? Answer us, CBI!" reverberated through the air. After an hour-long march through Salt Lake Township, the march culminated in a meeting in front of the CGO complex building that houses the CBI office, where Sridip Bhattacharya, Party Central Committee member, presented a charter of demands. He called for a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation by the CBI, the inclusion of all suspects in the probe, and ensuring the safety of witnesses. The assembled crowd raised their hands in unison to express their support for these demands. Bhattacharya announced that four representatives would present this charter of demands to the CBI officials.
Accordingly Party state secretary Md Salim, Polit Bureau member Ramchandra Dom, Minakshi Mukherjee representing the student-youth-women's movement, and Sanjukta Sen representing the lawyers' movement – these four representatives presented the demands to the investigating officer of the CBI. Afterward, Minakshi Mukherjee returned to the gathering and stated, "We have informed the CBI officers that merely going in circles on the basis of the information provided by the state police is insufficient. The motive behind the murder of the young female doctor must be uncovered. Those who destroyed evidence, along with all the culprits, must be brought to justice. This is why people across the state have taken to the streets; mothers with their children in their arms are demanding justice. If swift justice is not delivered, if the investigation into the RG Kar incident is allowed to gather dust in files like previous corruption cases, then the people will take up brooms if necessary to sweep away that dust. If loopholes are left in the investigation, people will step in to close those gaps to prevent the criminals from escaping. They will settle the score right here on the streets."
To gather information for the investigation, the CBI, after taking over the case, had summoned Minakshi Mukherjee to the CGO Complex. Md Salim, referencing this, stated in the meeting, "The Left will always cooperate and assist in the investigation whenever called upon. However, why haven't those responsible for hastily cremating the victim's body, those who misled her parents by claiming suicide over the phone from the hospital, and those involved in destroying evidence been summoned? Expand the scope of the investigation. Don't test the patience of the people who have stayed up all night and are protesting on the streets, demanding justice."
In this context, Salim called for intensified protests under the leadership of the red banner. He commended the junior doctors' movement but criticised attempts to exclude the red banner from the protests. He highlighted ongoing efforts to divide the movement and the resurgence of a "threat culture." Salim urged all protestors to fight for justice in their own ways but emphasized the "red banner's" responsibility to lead the charge.
Salim, issuing a stern warning to the CBI, also called upon the people of the state to unite and fight for justice. He expressed a lack of faith in both the state police and the CBI, emphasizing that their first demand was for a judicial inquiry led by a sitting judge into the RG Kar incident. He criticised the state police's ineffectiveness in controlling riotous violence, preventing bomb blasts, and curbing rape cases. He further accused the CBI of acting like a "pet mynah" of Modi, highlighting their silence and inaction on issues like RG Kar, Manipur, and Adani. He drew a parallel between the state police's allegiance to Mamata Banerjee and the CBI's subservience to Modi, and said that if Modi holds one of Adani's hands, Mamata Banerjee holds the other.
In the meeting, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Surya Mishra stressed the need for collective and united action, stating that this significant battle cannot be fought alone. He advocated for inclusiveness, emphasizing the need to involve ordinary citizens, even those who had voted for the Trinamool or BJP. Mishra highlighted the shared concerns of these citizens regarding their livelihoods, the RG Kar incident, and their sense of insecurity. He argued against blaming ordinary supporters of these parties and emphasized the importance of bringing them into the movement.
The meeting was presided over by Mrinal Chakraborty, secretary of CPI(M) North 24 Parganas district committee. Other speakers included Central Committee member Sujan Chakraborty, state secretariat member Palash Das, and Kallol Majumdar, secretary of the Kolkata district committee. Sujan Chakraborty raised a pointed question, "The higher-ups in the health department were well aware of the corruption at RG Kar Hospital. Why should they get a free pass?" Palash Das asserted, "The culprits cannot hide behind a mere civic volunteer. The extent of the victim's injuries makes it impossible to believe that this was the work of a single individual." Kallol Majumdar affirmed, "The CPI(M) will fight for justice on its own, alongside the Left, and will stand in solidarity with the struggles of civil society."
