THE All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO), in a statement issued on April 28, has unequivocally condemned the recent arrests of university students in the United States who were peacefully protesting against Israeli aggression on Gaza and stood in solidarity with the Palestinian people. These arrests represent a clear violation of the right to peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, and the pursuit of justice.
The right to protest peacefully is a fundamental pillar of democracy, and it is deeply concerning to witness the targeting and detention of students who were exercising this right to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. Such actions not only stifle dissent but also undermine the principles of democracy and human rights.
Moreover, the arrest of these students sends a chilling message that dissenting voices will not be tolerated, which is antithetical to the values of academic freedom and open discourse that universities should uphold. Students should be encouraged to engage in critical discussions and activism on important global issues without fear of persecution or retaliation.
AIPSO stands in solidarity with the arrested students and demands their immediate release. It also calls on authorities to respect the rights of all individuals to peacefully protest and express their opinions without facing harassment, intimidation, or legal repercussions.
It is imperative for the United States to uphold its commitment to human rights and justice by condemning all forms of aggression and advocate peaceful resolutions of conflicts. AIPSO urges all stakeholders to work towards a just and equitable future where the rights of all people, including Palestinians, are respected, and protected.
