IN order to stop the horse-trading indulged in by BJP across the country and to save the democratic system as enshrined in the constitution, it is our bounden duty to defeat BJP and its allies in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, said the CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury. He was addressing the Party cadre attending the second zonal level meeting held at Chengalpattu on February 28 covering the northern districts of Tamil Nadu.

Yechury further pointed out that the resources of the country are being looted in the interests of some of the friends of Modi. Public sector is being privatised. Public services are being undermined. Most of the people are denied quality food to survive in this situation. But the BJP is trying to divert the attention of the people and win over the elections. In this respect, our duty is to expose the failures of  Modi government in all respects before the people.

He further said that though the constitution has clearly stated that our country is following co-operative federalism and it is a union of states, the Modi government is trying to impose its autocratic rule upon the states through various means. It is also undermining the financial stability of the states thereby making them fight for their survival. Only in such a situation, the Kerala and Tamil Nadu state governments have approached Supreme Court against such vindictiveness of Modi government.

We communists have fought for the independence of the country as well as its unity. As such it is our duty to safeguard the interests of the people with all our might, he said. He also hoped that the people of Tamil Nadu will take the lead in defeating BJP and safeguarding the future of the people of this country.  His speech was translated by Central Committee member of the Party, U Vasuki.

Besides addressing a press conference at Chengalpattu explaining the current political situation in the country and the efforts of the CPI(M) in uniting forces opposing Hindutva ideology, Yechury also spoke at length in a public meeting held later in the evening. In his speech, Yechury said that our first goal in the present situation is that India should continue to be a secular and democratic country as per our constitution. To ensure, it is necessary to remove BJP from power. Currently, BJP is trying to change the secular character of the country into a fascistic, Hindutva one and hoped that the people of Tamil Nadu will show their resolve to defeat BJP in the ensuing elections. His speech was translated by Thomas Franco. The district secretary Bharathi Anna presided over the meeting in which state secretary K Balakrishnan, secretariat member K Balabharathi, state committee member Arumuga Nainar and others spoke. Various district committees handed over election fund to the state secretary totalling Rs 55.5 lakhs on this occasion.
