AS the election schedule is going to be announced soon, the CPI(M) Tamil Nadu state committee has convened two zonal-level workshops for its cadres as a preparatory measure in the state. One such workshop was held at Dindigul on February 24. The other at Chengalpattu on February 29. More than a thousand comrades from 22 districts of Tamil Nadu participated in the Dindigul workshop.
CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Prakash Karat addressing the meeting in Dindigul spoke at length on the importance of the ensuing parliamentary elections. The upcoming 18th Lok Sabha election is an opportunity for all to come together to save the Indian Republic. It is our bounden duty to protect democracy and secularism as its core principles and remove the fascistic BJP-RSS combine from power, he said.
Karat pointed out that the ten-year authoritarian rule of the BJP at the centre had terribly weakened the basic structure of our constitution, and as such, he reminded the participants that the upcoming Lok Sabha elections are not a usual one. It has a historical significance in determining the path of the future of India. He exhorted the Party cadres to plunge in full measure to take forward the political-ideological fight against these forces to throw out the Modi-led government from the Ccentre and sweep away the BJP from Tamil Nadu altogether.
On this score, he also pointed out that the INDIA team, which got formed to defeat BJP across the country, has taken measures to firm up alliances in all the states. While the political situation differs from state to state, considering the onerous responsibility of its task, the parties aligned with INDIA are working to overcome the usual machinations of the BJP to weaken the opposition. For example, in Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav of RJD is attracting lakhs of people in his rallies in the state, disregarding the treachery of Nitish Kumar of JD(U). Likewise, Congress has finalised amicable seat adjustment with Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and with AAP in Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Goa and Chandigarh. It is undertaking such negotiations in other states too with parties aligned with INDIA. Similarly, the secular progressive front in Tamil Nadu led by DMK is also preparing a strong ground to comprehensively defeat the BJP and AIADMK in the state. In that respect, Karat exhorted the Party cadres to work for pooling all anti-BJP votes and see that the alliance wins all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu.
Speaking at a public meeting later held in the evening at Dindigul, Karat inaugurated the electoral campaign of the CPI(M) and highlighted many wrongdoings of the BJP during its last ten years of rule. He pointed out that when the Modi-led BJP government brought in a law on electoral bonds in 2018, the CPI(M) was the only party to reject such donations and approached the apex court, challenging the law. Now, after five years, the apex court has given a verdict that this law is unconstitutional and said that it will only promote corruption. By this, our arguments have been upheld by the apex court. It has once again proved that the BJP is the most corrupt as it has legalised corruption. To perpetuate its rule, the BJP-RSS combine is dividing the people and eroding the secular character of the constitution through various means. In such a situation, it is time for all to come together to save the republic from the clutches of Hindutva and crony capitalist forces in the ensuing parliament elections, he said.
CPI(M) Tamil Nadu state secretary Balakrishnan pointed out in his speech that if the BJP had fulfilled the promises given to the farmers in 2014, the farmers would not have converged in Delhi in 2022 to fight against the mighty government and make it surrender before them. Even the assurances given by Modi to end that struggle were not fulfilled, and now, the farmers are again marching towards Delhi, defying all the obstacles being created by the centre and the nearby states.
With these happenings around, it is certain that the defeat of the BJP across the country has become a reality. However, if they threaten the opposition parties, the people of India will give a crushing blow to the BJP. In such a situation, PM Modi is visiting Tamil Nadu repeatedly. He is soon going to speak in Tiruppur, Coimbatore and Madurai. As long as he opens his mouth here, the people of Tamil Nadu will rise against BJP more resolutely as it has not fulfilled even a single promise given to Tamil Nadu during all these years, he added.
