Tripura: Grameen Bandh and Industrial Strike Successfully Held

THE people of Tripura positively responded to the Samyukta Kisan Morcha’s call for rural India bandh and the call of the Central Trade Unions for industrial/sectoral strike on February 16. Defying the open threat from the ruling miscreants, and aggressive picketing by the BJP sponsored BMS workers against bandh, the peasantry and the working people of the state spontaneously abstained from the workplace in large numbers. Though it was not a general strike, the number of vehicles on the road was evidently low. Most of the unorganised sector workers like transport workers, agricultural workers, daily wage earners, workers engaged in shops, loading-unloading workers, rubber tappers etc did not turn up to work on the day. The scheme workers expressed solidarity with the call but joined duty apprehending vindictive measures from the government as they have no service security. The government employees and teachers wore protest badges in the duty hours in support of the call.
Motor stands, railway stations and the urban area roads of the state were seen far less crowded on the day than the other days. As most of the commercial vehicles were off the road, the highways of the state showed a deserted look.
Manik Dey, Sankar Datta, president and general secretary of state CITU respectively, in a press conference at CITU office, congratulated the kisans and working people for spontaneously supporting the bandh call defying the threats by the ruling parties.
