THE Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch organised a demonstration at Butibori in Nagpur district, on February 14 to campaign for the rural India strike and to bring attention to the legitimate demands of the citizens of Butibori. It is noteworthy that Butibori was inaugurated as a 5-star MIDC area by the then prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi. However, following industrial development, numerous civic problems have surfaced.
The atmosphere in Butibori is now polluted, affecting the Vena River, which local fishermen rely on for their livelihoods. The area also faces challenges such as irregular drinking water supply and a substantial increase in population due to developmental activities.
In light of these issues, the demonstration raised several demands, including the need for an assistant tahsildar office, purification of the Vena River, rejection of the new electric smart meter scheme, and opposition to the new provisions in the Hit and Run act. Prior to this demonstration, a signature campaign was conducted in the city. Kailash Madavi, secretary of AARM Nagpur rural taluka committee, and Arun Latkar, vice president of Kisan Sabha Nagpur district, addressed the gathering.
The week-long campaign in Butibori leading up to the February 16th strike evoked good response from the people.
