CONDEMNING the autocratic attitude of the union government in curtailing the rights of the states through various means, the LDF-led Kerala government has decided to stage a dharna at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, on February 8. The dharna was led by Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, joined by his ministerial colleagues, MPs, and MLAs from Kerala. Several chief ministers and ministers from non-BJP ruled states also expressed their solidarity with Kerala by participating in this significant dharna programme. They highlighted how the union government is reducing the states to appendages, in stark contrast to the federal principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

Expressing solidarity with the dharna organised in New Delhi by the Kerala LDF government to reaffirm the principle of federalism, the CPI(M) Tamil Nadu state committee called upon its cadres and supporters to conduct demonstrations throughout the state on February 8. It has also invited the parties of the DMK-led Secular and Progressive Front to actively participate in these demonstrations. Consequently, on February 8, the cadres and supporters of CPI(M) and other parties affiliated with the Secular and Progressive Front, including DMK, DK, Congress, MDMK, VCK, IUML, MNMK, and TVK, actively participated in large numbers across the state.

On behalf of the CPI(M), the state secretary K Balakrishnan (Cuddalore), Polit Bureau member, G Ramakrishnan (Thanjavur), senior leader T K Rangarajan (South Chennai), Central Committee member P Sampath (North Chennai), and Central Committee member              P Shanmugam (Thiruvarur) led the demonstrations at the respective centers. DK leader K Veeramani (Trichy) and CPI state secretary R Mutharasan (Thiruvarur) led the demonstrations in the respective places.

The programme highlighted the anti-democratic and anti-federal activities of the Modi-led union government, which have led to the collapse of the country’s economy and the erosion of the social ethos that was previously upheld.

BJP-RSS Ideology Aims to Perpetuate Caste system

RELEASING a book titled Field Experiences in the Struggle against Caste Oppression, written by CPI(M) Central Committee member  P Sampath, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Prakash Karat expressed that the ruling BJP-RSS combine is vigorously working to establish the Hindutva-brahminic Manuvadi philosophy, aiming to perpetuate the caste system in society indefinitely. He asserted that such efforts would regress society by undermining the social progress achieved through long and arduous struggles spanning many centuries in the country.

Karat emphasized that defeating this retrograde philosophy is crucial to putting an end to caste oppression. Simultaneously, he underscored the importance of uniting the struggle against class exploitation with the fight against caste oppression.

Expressing happiness at the launch of the Tamil book, Karat suggested that the book, which chronicles various struggles against untouchability in Tamil Nadu and the caste oppression faced by SC/ST communities, should be promptly translated into English. This translation would facilitate sharing the message in other Indian languages, as caste oppression remains prevalent in various parts of the country. He emphasized that the field experiences gained from struggles in Tamil Nadu could serve as a guiding light for other states in India.

Karat also recalled his participation in the movement initiated by the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front (TNUEF) a few years ago. This movement aimed to dismantle a wall erected by caste forces in Uthappuram, Madurai district, preventing people from oppressed sections from visiting the village temple. However, the state administration promptly intervened and brought down the wall a day before the scheduled programme.

The book release programme was presided over by Tamil Nadu CPI(M) state secretary                 K Balakrishnan. Central Committee member U Vasuki, CPI state secretary R Mutharasan, TNUEF general secretary K Samuel Raj, VCK leader Vanni Arasu, and Aadhi Thamizhar Katchi leader K Jaggaiyan extended their felicitations to the author for documenting these significant events in the pages of history. Author and Central Committee member P Sampath addressed the meeting held on this occasion.
