Comrade Keshab Majumder
COMRADE Keshab Majumder, a distinguished academician, CPI(M) leader, former state committee member, and three-term minister in the Left Front government, breathed his last on January 11, 2024. Battling various ailments due to old age, he succumbed at the age of 88 after several years of illness.
Born in 1936 in the Burdwan district of West Bengal, Comrade Majumder, after completing his academic journey, became associated with Left and democratic movements in West Bengal. In 1958, he joined the Communist Party of India (CPI) in West Bengal. In 1962, he joined Ramesh High School in Udaipur, Gomati district, Tripura, as a teacher and settled permanently here with his family.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Comrade Majumder passionately imparted democratic and progressive values to his students, earning their respect and friendship. Notable political figures like Manik Sarkar, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, were among the many students influenced by Comrade Majumder. Simultaneously, Comrade Majumder actively participated in organising and expanding movements addressing various issues affecting the people of Udaipur.
In 1964, during the Party split, Comrade Majumder joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist). His active involvement in mass movements and close connection with the people established him as a respected leader across all sections of the Udaipur sub-division.
Comrade Majumder was the founding president of the youth organisation in Udaipur sub-division. He was elected to the Tripura legislative assembly seven times consecutively from Kakraban constituency starting in 1977. Serving as a minister from 1993 to 2008, he showcased excellent administrative skills in managing various departments such as education, electricity, health, and revenue.
In the 12th state conference of the Party in 1985, he was elected as a Party state committee member, a position he held until 2018 when he sought to be relieved from this responsibility due to health concerns. He also served as the secretary of the Udaipur sub-divisional committee at one point. Comrade Majumder was a Left ideologue and a Party teacher.
The CPI(M) Tripura state secretariat, Left parties in the state, various mass organisations, and Manik Sarkar personally expressed their condolences over the demise of Comrade Keshab Majumder.
