CITU: May Day Manifesto 2023

CITU strongly condemns the total indifference of the Modi government to the growing distress of the people. The Modi government is not allowing discussions on people’s burning issues in parliament. It has not allowed discussion in parliament on the Hindenburg report that exposed the stock manipulation of Adani group and the demand to constitute JPC to probe the issue. All the wings of the State including the ED, CBI, Income Tax department, police etc are used to intimidate voices of opposition to its policies. Parliamentary norms and principles are violated. The government proposed amendment to the IT rules that is meant to censor social media with government agencies authorised to mark ‘fake news’ and remove it from online platforms.

In addition, BJP and various other outfits of the RSS are intensifying their attempts for communal polarisation, particularly keeping in view the ensuing elections to different states and to parliament next year. Love jihad, hijab, azan, namaz in public places, commercial space for Muslim vendors, gauraksha, religious conversions, population control, religious festivals like Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti etc are all used to provoke communal tensions and violence. Attempts are made to convert India into a rabidly majoritarian ‘Hindu Rashtra’ subverting our secular traditions and the Constitution drafted by Ambedkar which has been adopted by the people of our country. CITU calls upon the working class to be vigilant against such divisive machinations of the RSS and other communal forces of all hues and uphold the unity of the people.

CITU strongly condemns the increasing violence against women and children, dalits and adivasis. The frequent misogynist statements from BJP and RSS leaders at various levels reflecting their manuvadi brahminical attitude encourage such heinous attacks.

On this May Day, CITU seeks to draw the attention of the entire toiling class to the mad destructive drive of the corporate communal nexus in governance to completely restructure the management of economy, management of the political system and the societal governance too through communal divisive machinations, towards an aggressive authoritarian direction with a clear fascistic intent, only to facilitate unhindered loot and plunder of the country’s resources, assets, infrastructure by the private corporate class amidst the deepening systemic crisis. This is also leading to destruction/squeeze of the country’s manufacturing economy resulting in further continuation of job-losses, widening of impoverishment and destitution of the masses along with the steep rise in unemployment and under-employment. A programme of all-out privatisation is being supplemented by National Monetisation Pipeline which aims at virtually handing over the entire infrastructure sector to private corporate virtually free with a monopolistic control. Employment relations are being targeted for total fragility aiming to convert the workers in workplaces virtually into slaves without any rights, while seeking to push workers’ organisations and established bipartite and tripartite mechanisms into complete irrelevance; enactment of labour codes has already prepared the ground and further administrative and legislative actions are being speeded up by the government at the centre and also in many states on deregulating/flexibilising/increasing working hours and other service conditions. Simultaneously all democratic norms of governance and adjudication including democratic institutions, parliamentary forums and basic constitutional provisions are being continuously undermined and marginalised.

Elections under the Modi government have been converted into a farce. Role of money and muscle power have reached unprecedented levels making a mockery of elections. BJP receives the lion’s share of the funding through the opaque electoral bonds, mostly funded by the big corporates, who see the BJP as their best bet in carrying forward their agenda in the present situation of growing discontent among the people, in suppressing struggles and preventing the Left, which fights for alternative pro-poor policies, from gaining from these struggles.

On this May Day, CITU reiterates its pledge to continue to carry on determined combat against such destructive, anti-people authoritarian machinations of the ruling class and their political agents through widening and heightening the united struggle of the working class to the level of defiance and resistance.

On this May Day

CITU affirms its commitment to strengthen joint trade union struggles to safeguard workers’ interests. It calls upon all its unions and cadres to effectively implement the calls of the joint trade union convention of January 30, 2023 for extensive campaign and joint multiple days ‘mahapadav’ from August 9, 2023 at district level. It calls upon the entire organisation to gear up for the next course of action to be decided by the joint trade union platform, which called for year-long actions culminating in general strike and defeat of the anti-worker Modi government in 2024 parliament elections.

Significantly, the Mazdoor Kisan Sangharsh Rally on April 5 also gave the call to defeat the Modi government in the 2024 parliament elections to save the nation and save the people.

CITU, which is a constituent of both, calls upon its cadres to take this message to the mass of the workers and people as this alone can pave the way for intensifying the struggle for pro-worker and pro-people policies.

On this Day,

Let us pledge to uphold and strengthen working class unity and decisively defeat all communal divisive machinations of the ruling classes

Let us strive to strengthen the unity of the workers and peasants taking it to the grassroots level and develop joint actions on common demands

Let us convert the rising discontent among the working class into raised consciousness about their true friends and enemies and mobilise its entire strength against the corporate communal nexus in governance

For the defeat of the anti-worker anti-people anti-national Modi government!

For the intensification of the struggle for alternative pro-people policies!
