On Tripura Assembly Polls

THE electors of Tripura have set a unique example of determined and powerful role to restore democracy, peace, harmony and the rule of law in the state in the assembly elections on February 16. In this amazing battle, practically, the heroic voters themselves emerge as victorious. This election would be a historic example in the state for the zeal that has been exhibited by the electors to exercise their fundamental rights by casting vote by themselves thwarting all machinations, defying intimidation, obstacles, physical attacks in various places plotted and unleashed by the ruling party. This may be an example before the nation also. The state secretariat of the CPI(M) has conveyed its sincere and deep respect and gratefulness to the brave electors of the state.

The poll this time has taken unusually long time. The electors had to stand in queue for hours. Though the poll was scheduled to conclude at 4 pm, in many polling booths voters were standing in queue to cast their votes till 9 pm. This was not expected. We express regret and sympathy for the problem faced by the voters. We press our demand before the Election Commission to take appropriate corrective measures so that such problem does not recur in future.

Reports poured in that in various polling booths, the opposition polling agents were gheraoed and physically hurt by the BJP miscreants when they were coming out of the polling booths after performing their duty. We strongly condemn such cowardly attitude of the ruling party. We press demand before the Election Commission to ensure their safe return under proper security cover provided by the police and the administration. The alleged miscreants involved in attacks and their abettors must be booked and legal actions must be taken against them.
