Verify Entries & Prepare a New Electoral Roll for MLC Elections in AP

THE Andhra Pradesh state committee of CPI(M) has raised alarm over the large-scale entry of ineligible names in the electoral rolls prepared for the legislative council elections scheduled in Andhra Pradesh. Thousands of voters who do not qualify to participate in the elections for teachers and graduate constituencies in the legislative council are enrolled for the elections.

Handing over documents that provide evidence of these malpractices, CPI(M) Central Committee member, R Arun Kumar, Party MPs Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya and V Sivadasan along with others submitted a memorandum to the chief election commissioner in New Delhi on December 13, requesting verification of entries and preparation of a new electoral roll for the MLC elections in Andhra Pradesh.

The delegation also handed over a letter written by CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, which requested the chief election commissioner to direct a proper and thorough check of the entire voters list and delete those who are found to violate the stipulated criteria. A new electoral roll prepared after such a verification process needs to be published to ensure a free and fair election. The letter asked the chief election commissioner to direct the Election Commission officers to carry out such an exercise and uphold the constitutional guarantees for the conduct of a free and fair election.
