Kerala: M V Govindan Elected as CPI(M) State Secretary

ON August 28, 2022, CPI(M) state committee elected M V Govindan as the new secretary of the state unit. According to the statement issued by the state committee, the decision was taken as Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, CPI(M) current state secretary was not well due to health reasons. Central Committee member, E P Jayarajan presided over the meeting attended by Party general secretary, Sitaram Yechury, Polit Bureau members, Prakash Karat, Pinarayi Vijayan, and  M A Baby.

M V Govindan, currently a member of the CPI(M) Central Committee and minister of local self-government, hails from Morazha, a land that has witnessed peasant uprisings against imperialism.
He has five-decades of experience as a political activist. His role as a political leader started right from his tender age as a worker of the Balasangham and the library movement. He became district secretary of the Kannur district youth federation and also a leader of the KSF. He got CPI(M) membership in 1969. He is one of the founding leaders of the DYFI.

He suffered a brutal attack during the emergency period and was sentenced to jail for four months. He was elected to the state assembly from Taliparamba constituency last year with a huge margin. Previously he served as a legislator for 10 years.
In the early 1980's he served as Kasaragod taluk secretary of CPI(M) and as Kannur district secretary in 2002.

M V Govindan was elected to Party Central Committee in 2018. He is 68 years old. Currently he is also serving as the national vice-president of the All India Agricultural Workers Union.
