K Nethaji

THE Party state committee in Andhra Pradesh had decided to take up a campaign called “Janam kosam CPI(M)” (CPI(M) for People) from June 1- July 11. All the Party leaders and cadres went to the people door-to-door and learnt about their problems. After getting information from all the families in that habitation, the team segregated the issues and chalked out agitation programmes at local level (village/ ward secretariats) and mandal level and this activity culminated in a dharna at the district collectorates offices on July 11.

The campaign was carried out in 421 mandals, 71 towns, 3066 villages and 1226 municipal wards and about 6 lakhs families were visited. 16 lakhs pamphlets and 25,000 door posters/wall posters were published. 80 per cent of the Party units and 70 per cent of Party members participated in this campaign. About 54,000 participated in local (village/ward) dharnas and more than 27,000 participated at the mandal level. District level dharnas at collectorates were attended by 25,000. People came to the collectorates with written representations requesting a solution to their problems. Women took part in the stir on a large scale. People thronged the district collectorates on their long pending grievances and raised slogans. Price rise was the major issue. People demanded the governments to reduce taxes on petroleum products. They demanded the state government to reduce the enhanced electricity tariff and the hiked RTC bus charges, and to slash down the property tax and not to burden them with garbage tax. Long pending grievances like completion of Jagananna houses, distribution of TIDCO houses etc were among them.

Party state leaders attended the dharnas and addressed the gatherings. They came down heavily against the polices of Modi government that betrayed the people of Andhra Pradesh by denying special category status and not fulfilling the assurances given at the time of the bifurcation of the state. “When Modi had assumed the prime minister’s office, the price of cooking gas was at Rs 450, now that price has reached Rs 1150. In the meanwhile the state chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy could not raise his voice for achieving the special status for the state”, they charged and added that he ignored the important pending issues.  His party plenary was concluded without any discussion on people's long pending issues, CPI(M) leaders criticised. Both the ruling YSRCP and the main opposition TDP have been supporting the BJP at the centre and not opposing the BJP’s betrayal of the state. The leaders assured the people that struggle will continue till the problems are resolved.
