Kerala: On Thrikkakara By-election Results

Below we publish the statement issued by the CPI (M) Kerala state secretariat on Thrikkakara by-election results

UDF was able to secure victory in the Thrikkakara by-election by uniting the anti-Left forces. In the last assembly elections, the LDF got 45,510 votes which increased to 47,754 in this by-election. LDF obtained 2,244 more votes in the by-elections as compared to the last assembly elections. LDF's vote share also increased from 33.32 per cent to 35.28 per cent. These figures show that the popular support and vote base of the Left Democratic Front has not been damaged in this constituency.

UDF's votes increased from 59,839 to 72,770 as the votes flowed from BJP and groups like Twenty20. BJP had obtained 21,249 votes in the 2016 assembly election and 15,483 votes in the 2021 assembly election proving the fact that BJP votes are going in favor of the UDF – a trend that was seen in the by-election too.

In the last election, Twenty20 got 13,897 votes and they did not even put up a candidate in this election. This is another reason why UDF, which had a lead of 14,329 votes in the last assembly elections, was able to increase it to 25,016 in the by-elections.

Accepting the verdict, the CPI (M) said it would scrutinise its by-election activities in the constituency that has always stood with the UDF.
