Comrade Mahendra Singh
CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on July 4, 2021
THE Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) expresses its deep shock and grief at the sudden death of a member of its Central Committee and veteran leader of the Party in Maharashtra, Mahendra Singh. He died this morning owing to a heart attack. He had recovered from Covid a few months back. Mahendra Singh was 77 years old.
Trained as an engineer, while working, he began a union of workers in his own factory and left his job. He joined the CPI(M) in 1971 and plunged into trade union work under the then newly formed CITU. In 1985 he survived a murderous attack on him by goons hired by the management of the Aristocrat company, where the CITU-affiliated union was leading a struggle.
He was elected to the CPI(M) Maharashtra state committee in 1987, to the state secretariat in 1991, and to the Central Committee in 2015. He remained in these positions till his death. He was secretary of the CPI(M) Mumbai district committee from 1994 to 2015 and played a major role in sustaining and developing the Party in Mumbai. He was also the founder state general secretary of the DYFI from 1986 to 1989.
He led a very simple life and was a comrade of the highest integrity and loyalty to the Party.
The Polit Bureau conveys its heartfelt condolences to his wife Savitri.
