KERALA chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed the media on November 23, that the amendment to the Kerala Police Act will not be implemented as various opinions came up from different sections.

The governor has promulgated an ordinance regarding this.

Earlier the Kerala state government had decided to bring an amendment as an effort to stop false propaganda which questions the citizen's individual freedom and constitution-given dignity, through social media and through other means.

There are criticisms and complaints from various corners of society against defamatory, false and obscene propaganda. There are big protests in society against merciless attacks against women and transgenders.

There have been incidents which led to families being dismembered and victims dying by suicide. Many, including heads of media organisations, demanded the legislative route against this. This was the context in which amendment to the Police Act was considered.

After the amendment was announced,  many, including those who support the Left Democratic Front and those who stand for the defence of democracy, expressed concern. In this context, the legislative amendment will not be implemented. Further steps will be taken after detailed discussion is held in the legislative assembly, and after listening to opinions from all sides.

It is requested that those who have indulged in propaganda that is not in keeping with the essence of individual freedom and humanity through social media and through other means desist from such activity, and that the entire society should remain vigilant about this, CM said.
