Maharashtra: CPI(M) Releases First list of Candidates

THE CPI(M) Maharashtra state committee has announced the first list of four candidates for the ensuring assembly elections for the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. The names of the candidates are as:

1. Solapur Central               Narasayya Adam

2. Kalwan (ST)                      J P Gavit

3.Nashik West                      Dr D L Karad

4.Dahanu (ST)                     Vinod Nikole

The Party has stated that the main objectives of the CPI(M) in this election are:

1) To defeat the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance;

2) To increase the strength of the CPI(M) and other left parties in the state assembly;

3) To establish a secular government in the state.

The BJP-led governments at the centre and the state, by their anti-people, pro-corporate, communal and authoritarian policies have destroyed the livelihood of the common people of Maharashtra.

The CPI(M) will highlight the following issues in the assembly elections:

The current unprecedented economic crisis; unemployment attaining the highest level in the last five decades; the state topping in number of farmer suicides in the country; reneging on the assurance of complete loan waiver to farmers and remunerative price at one and half times the cost of production for farm produce; government's utter failure in handling the harrowing flood situation in Mumbai, Pune and South Maharashtra and also the severe drought in Marathwada and Vidarbha; continuous attacks from all sides on the working class; putting the agricultural workers in dire straits by drastically reducing expenditure on MNREGA.

The party will try to build the political discourse on the issues of the people that include; denying forest rights to the adivasis and increase in child deaths due to malnutrition in those areas; increasing attacks on women, dalits and minorities; targeting several opposition leaders misusing government machinery as a means of revenge and bribing them to join the ruling alliance; the failure in identifying and arresting the main conspirators behind the murders of Dr Narendra Dabholkar and Comrade Govind Pansare; the conspiracy hatched at the behest of the government to let free the culprits behind the Bhima Koregaon riots and arresting and imprisoning several innocent people; the attacks on people's livelihoods, democracy, secularism and the Indian Constitution and the assurance of equitable, balanced and all round development of the state as promised by the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement will be the main points on which the Communist Party of India (Marxist) will effectively campaign in the entire state in these elections.
