West Bengal: CPI(M) Will Forge Links with People

From our Special Correspondent

CPI(M) WEST BENGAL state committee has decided to redouble its efforts to forge links with the people to regain their confidence. Two-day state committee meeting on July 23-24 has also decided to initiate series of movements on peoples’ issues.

CPI(M) general secretary, Sitaram Yechury, addressing the meeting said, Modi government in its second term has blatantly taken steps against  the constitution, constitutional institutions,  civil liberties, etc. Bills have been passed to undermine citizens’ fundamental rights. Sangh parivar has become more offensive. Left has to regain their support in this difficult situation. In Bengal, the binary of TMC-BJP polarisation has to be broken. Left has to place counter political narratives before people. The Left in Bengal always carried the legacy of Bengal renaissance before and after independence. We must uphold that legacy. We have to re-establish close contact with the people. We have to build up broadest platform to fight against communalism and to work for the restoration of democracy.

State secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra said, those who have voted for TMC and BJP in Lok Sabha elections, have not left us permanently. They have to be won back. In fact, in many ‘terrorised’ areas, there is considerably good response in Party programmes after the elections. The fake construction of jingoistic nationalism or false identity by BJP will not last long. Left has to build up struggles on the questions of livelihood. At the same time, consistent contact with the people has to be maintained. We have to build up independent strength of the Party, broader Left Front and gather more allies and form broadest possible platform of forces that are against BJP and TMC.

State committee reviewed tasks set out by plenum. On the course of discussion, organisational weaknesses have been identified. But at the same time it was reported that Party and mass organisations are out on the streets after the elections. Movements and campaigns on peoples’ issues, on peace and harmony, on local issues are being conducted daily. Trade unions have decided to launch series of movements. There will be massive rallies by Party in all the districts in September.
