SPEAKING at an election rally held on December 5 in support of Jagmati Sangwan for the post of mayor of Rohtak Municipal Corporation, Brinda Karat, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and former MP, said Jagmati Sangwan is the best candidate as she has been raising her voice for the pro-people issues. All mayors in the past proved to be unconcerned towards the people's problems.
An impressive road-show was organised through the main bazaars of the city, which was warmly received by the bystanders. CPI(M) state secretary Surender Singh said that the ruling BJP has nominated a capitalist for the post of mayor. He assured that we shall provide transparency in the corporation functioning. He said that although Jagmati is contesting on CPI(M) symbol but she is a candidate of the people. He hoped that we will succeed in liberating the corporation from the stranglehold of real estate sharks.
Jagmati made a scathing attack on the BJP for the worst situation of law and order, as a result of which, people, particularly women are feeling insecure and are made to live in fear. Most of the colonies are not getting safe drinking water, she alleged. Corruption was all pervasive in the corporation and resources were being misused. She assured that with the support of people, she will strive to put an end to it and ensure transparency. We will make provision for ward sabhas for grass root involvement of the ordinary citizens, she said.
Others who spoke included a well known social worker, Capt. Shamsher Singh Malik, 2+5 Jan Andolan convenor Advocate Satyavir Singh Hooda, Inderjit Singh, Vinod Deswal, Sanjeev, Sumit, Principal (retd.) Mahabir Sharma.
