GUJARAT: Condolence Meeting for Comrade Subodh Mehta

COMRADE Subodh Mehta, veteran leader of CITU and CPI(M) Gujarat committee, passed away on September 1, at Bhavnagar at the age of 90 Years. He was the icon of various movements in Gujarat. He fought many battles for the people of Gujarat. During Maha Gujarat movement, he had played an important role with Lt. Shri Indulal Yagnik. On September 2, his body was kept at the CITU office in Bhavnagar. Thousands of people paid tributes to Subodh Mehta. Shaktisinh Gohel, national leader of Congress also visited the place. From insurance employees, H I Bhatt, Cyril Shukla, Kamlesh Bhatt, Haresh Bhatt and others paid tributes to Comrade Mehta. His body was donated to Red Cross society for the use of medical students.
An all party and trade union condolence meeting was arranged on September 9 in Ahmedabad which was presided over by Amubhai Ravani, ex chief justice, Rajasthan. Leaders of different political parties like Congress, BJP, CPI, CPI(M), SUCI,CPI(ML), Samajwadi party, JD(U) participated. Working class leaders, trade union leaders from entire Gujarat were present. The state leadership of CITU, AITUC, INTUC, HMS, and BMS in large numbers participated in the programme. Sitaram Yechury, CPI(M) general secretary attended this programme. He spoke about his experience with Comrade Subodh Mehta. Bharat Solanki, Congress state president, Madhusudan Mistry, Rajya Sabha MP, Congress, ex chief minister Suresh Mehta, Jitubhai Vaghani, BJP state president, Pravinsinh Jadeja and other prominent political party leaders remembered their memories of Comrade Subodh Mehta. CPI(M) Central Committee member Arun Mehta, Janak Raval from AIBEA, H I Bhatt, AIIEA, Manibhai Solanki, INTUC, Ashok Panjabi, Jayanti Panchal from HMS also spoke. Authors, columnists and writers Manishi Jani, Yashvant Mehta, Indukumar Jani and Pragjibhai Bhambhi, CPI(M) state secretary spoke on the life and their attachment with Comrade Subodh Mehta. Various other organisations like Kisan Sabha, SFI, DYFI, Janvadi Mahila Samiti, ASHA workers union, Anganwadi workers union, SEWA, LIC Employees union and some other NGOs were also present in the meeting. The entire hall was full which reflected the eminence of Comrade Subodh Mehta amongst the working class movement and his struggle for common people.
