DEFEATING the opportunistic and unholy alliance of all anti-Left political parties, the Left Front in Tripura maintained its dominance winning 520 of the 587 village committees of TTAADC. In terms of seats, Left Front won in 3,838 out of 4,597. Of these, CPI(M) won in 3,806 seats,  while CPI,  RSP and FB won in 12, 12 and 8 seats, respectively. The Left Front won in 88.59 per cent of village committees and in 83.5 per cent of seats. The polling was held on February 24. It witnessed a fairly good turnout of 85.5 per cent despite heavy rains and storm in some parts of the state.

CPI(M) won 901 seats unopposed. It won all the seats of 59 village committees as the opposition could not field candidates there. IPFT too won one seat unopposed. Polling took place for 3,695 seats of 528 village committees in Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). Though there was no official alliance or tie-up, this election witnessed an unholy and clandestine understanding between Congress, BJP, INPT and IPFT in most of the villages. The results, however, revealed that the people under TTAADC have reposed their faith in the Left Front.

Congress cut a sorry figure managing to win just nine village committees. BJP opened its account by winning four village committees. IPFT and INPT won in 25 and 20 village committees, respectively. Three were won by others while results remained hung in six village committees.

CPI(M) state secretary Bijan Dhar accompanied by Central Committee member Gautam Das, in a press conference, on Sunday greeted the people on this massive victory. Dhar said the results showed that the people have rejected IPFT 's call for a separate state and the communal BJP and responded to our call of peace, harmony, unity and development. However, we would urge the masses to be vigilant against these divisive forces. The results have been quite good for us though we could do better in Dhalai district where the opposition had formed alliance in all the blocks. What organisational loophole lies behind this shall be thoroughly looked into. He said the village committees won by the Left Front will continue to work with commitment to the people. Das said this election has completely exposed the bankruptcy of the Congress as its state leaders openly called for an opportunistic umbrella alliance against the Left Front forgetting its so-called ideological struggle against the saffron party. But the people have given them a befitting reply.
