DSMM Demands Judicial Enquiry into Horrific Attack on Dalits in Rajasthan

The following is the statement issued by the Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch on May 19. THE Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch condemns the horrific crime committed against dalits in Dangawas village in Rajasthan’s Nagaur district where 3 dalit men were killed on May 15. They were mowed down under tractors by the Jats, who are a dominant caste in the region, over a land dispute. Many dalits were grievously injured. Dalit women were molested, severely beaten and there were repeated attempts to disrobe them. Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch demands a judicial enquiry into the incident. It demands that a compensation of Rs 25 lakhs be provided to the victims’ families immediately. It expresses concern at the insensitive attitude of the state government. DSMM condemns the anti-dalit stance and delaying tactics of the police administration that has failed to prevent the attack, despite being warned repeatedly about the long standing tensions. It demands that the government must ensure the arrest of all the accused immediately and book them under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. The government must ensure the medical treatment of all the injured. It must take steps to restore confidence among the dalits in the village as hundreds of dalits from Dangawas and surrounding villages have fled from their villages, fearing an attack on their lives.
