Comrade Bireswar Lahiri

CPI(M) West Bengal state committee member Comrade Bireswar Lahiri passed away on March 3, late in the night. He was 68. Comrade Lahiri, former secretary of North Dinajpur district committee was suffering from various illnesses and was admitted at a Kolkata hospital.

Comrade Bireswar Lahiri was a leading student leader in northern Bengal in the late sixties. Later he was the president of DYF in the undivided West Dinajpur district. In 1992, when the district was divided, he became the CPI(M) district secretary of North Dinajpur, a responsibility he served until last December. He was serving as the convenor of the Left Front in the district.

Comrade Bireswar Lahiri was repeatedly jailed and tortured in the seventies. He was arrested during Emergency and served a 19 month imprisonment under the MISA. Soft spoken and large-hearted Comrade Lahiri was loved by all.  

He is survived by two daughters.

Comrade Lahiri’s body was brought to the CPI(M) state office in the morning on March 4. Party leaders paid tributes to him. His body was taken to Raiganj, North Dinajpur district headquarters. The funeral rally took place on March 5.
