Raise Voice against Govt Move to Disinvest FCI

Asim Bala

PRIME Minister Narendra Modi has raised some points, in Parliament on June 19 regarding the Food Corporation of India (FCI), that are not in the interests of our people as well as for the employees. The Food Corporation of India was started in 1965 for proper distribution of food grains to the people of our country, especially those living in rural areas. Since then FCI was engaged in food distribution. Our country is very vast and all provinces are not equally agriculture producing state. Punjab and Haryana are major producers of wheat, and Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal are major producers of rice; and these grains are being distributed to all other states. FCI plays a pivotal role in the operations of the public distribution system, along with the state. The intention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding FCI, which plays such an important role, is to hand it over to private players. The Prime Minister has mentioned that FCI will break up into three commercial public sector companies i.e. (1) The National Grain Procurement Corporation (NGPC), and (2) The Logistics and Distribution Corporation of India (LDC) -- each of these agencies would be extensively given to the private industries. And (3) the Storage Capacities of the FCI would either be handed over to the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) or leased out to credible private player. It is very sad for us as well as for the people of India that our prime minister has completed only three months in office and we could easily understand his intention for public sector undertakings (PSUs). We cannot say that the Food Corporation of India is in healthy condition at this situation. At the time of beginning of FCI, there were 73 thousand employees, workers including officers but now the FCI management has reduced the man power to only 24 thousand. And with this man power a vast corporation like FCI cannot run smoothly which are most detrimental to the FCI as well as to the people. Due to shortage of man power, the food grain distribution is suffering and storage loses are very high. The move of the government is very clear that they like to disinvest the FCI to private hand. People as well as employees and workers should raise their voice and take the issues to the people of our country and resist the move.
