Tripura Marches for World Peace

Haripada Das

AS part of worldwide protest against imperialist war and for sustained world peace, the people of Tripura in their thousands joined in protest marches in various parts of the state, including the capital city of Agartala, on September 1, the day commemorating the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. In every sub-divisional headquarters, all sections of people joined in colourful march depicting the destruction and devastations of the war and with the appeal to make the world more conducive for living of every human being. In Agartala, activists of various mass and class organisations gathered at Vivekananda Ground with flags and festoons, anti-war posters, placards, and tableaus etc. State ministers including the Chief Minister, members of Parliament, legislators and commissioners of Agartala Municipal Corporation joined the rally. Workers of several organisations like transport and industry, peasants, agricultural workers, youth, students, government employees, doctors, advocates, engineers, differently-able people with their walking aid, nurses, fire-fighters, and cultural workers joined the rally. Agartala Municipal Corporation mayor Prafullajit Sinha read out the resolution against war and flagged off the Peace Rally. In the proclamation, Sinha asserted that the world witnessed two devastating wars in the last century. Both the wars were manifestation of imperialist interest, and were not in the interest of the common people. Apart from demolition of large number of constructions, the loss of lives assessed was about 2,00,00,000 in the First World War and 5,50,00,000 in the Second World War. A large number of the victims were civilians, including children, women and elderly. Mass destructive atomic weapons dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the US imperialist in the Second World War is the shivering experience of any senile people. The aggressive war has no respite even today. Aggression of Israel in Gaza is the latest instance. The proclamation took a vow to resist any imperialist war at any cost for sustained world peace. Then the Peace Rally marched through B K Road, Jackson Gate, Kaman Chowmohni, Post Office Chowmohani, Paradise Chowmohani, Battala and ended at the Umakanta Academy Grounds.
