LDF Doubles its Tally in Lok Sabha Elections

IN a modest performance in the Lok Sabha elections, Left Democratic Front has doubled its tally in Kerala. The front bagged eight seats while retaining the existing four seats and wresting four seats from UDF. UDF’s tally is 12. The CPI (M) has won 7 seats including two independents while the CPI got one.
The sitting MPs – CPI (M) Central Committee member P Karunakaran (Kasargode), M B Rajesh (Palakkad), P K Biju (Alathur), A Sambath (Attingal) were re-elected. CPI (M) Central Committee member and AIDWA leader P K Srimathi defeated sitting MP K Sudhakaran of Congress in Kannur by a margin of 6566 votes. P Karunakaran defeated immediate rival belonging to the Congress party, T Siddique by a margin of 6921 votes. M B Rajesh scored a historic win over M P Veerendra Kumar of Socialist Janata by a margin of 1,05,300 votes. In the last elections, the majority obtained by Rajesh was 1820 vote. P K Biju has defeated the Congress candidate P K Sheeba by a margin of 32,617 votes. Previous election’s majority was 20,000. A Sambath has made a tremendous win over Congress candidate Bindu Krisha by a huge margin of 69,378 votes.
C N Jayadevan from CPI has won over P C Chacko, chairman of 2G spectrum JPC by a margin of 38,227 votes. LDF independent candidate, Innocent, a well known film actor won from Chalakkudi by a margin of 13,884 votes.
CPI (M) Polit Bureau member M A Baby has lost to UDF candidate N K Premachandran of RSP by a margin of 37,649 votes in Kollam. Central committee member A Vijayaraghavan has lost to Congress’ M K Raghavan in Kozhikode by a margin of 16,883 votes. Ministers in UPA government K V Thomas, K C Venugopal and Kodikkunnil Suresh, Shashi Tharoor have registered their victory in Eranakulam, Alappuzha, Mavelikkara and Thiruvananthapuram respectively.
BJP has been unsuccessful to register a victory in Thiruvananthapuram, as its candidate O Rajagopal lost in a close contest against Shashi Tharoor of the Congress party and Bennet Abraham of the LDF.
